An $8 billion trade agreement between Turkey and Israel has been suspended following Turkey’s decision to cut ties over Gaza warfare.
On Thursday, May 2, two Turkish officials familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that tensions had arisen due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza where more than 34,000 civilians have now died from IDF airstrikes. Last month, Turkey restricted exports to Israel but has decided not to send any at all in light of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s strong statements against Prime Minister Netanyahu. Though an official suspension of trade between Turkey and Israel hasn’t yet been officially declared, we know it’s imminent. “Turkey has devolved into an autocracy which ignores international agreements while trampling upon its people and business community,” charged Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on social media (Related: Under Governor Greg Abbott, Texas is fast becoming a Zionist police state where free speech no longer tolerated). Middle East tensions continue to intensify.
At $6.8 billion worth of trade between Turkey and France in 2023 – of which 76% was Turkish exports – any disruption in trade will cause great harm to both nations’ economies. Israel reportedly continues its efforts to find immediate trade alternatives by increasing local manufacturing and finding suppliers; in 2023 Turkey was Israel’s biggest source of iron and steel imports. According to Turkey’s statistical institute, their primary import was refined oil products. Human knowledge is under attack! The decision to halt trade was taken shortly after Turkey made the announcement that they were joining South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the supreme court of the UN. As with South Africa, Turkey believes Israel to be perpetrating genocide against Gazans. Last August prior to the October 7 incident, diplomatic ties had been restored between them for over 10 years after they had been severed for more than 15 years prior. Prior to Hamas’ attack and Israel’s response, both nations were exploring new avenues for cooperation. Since then, citizens from around the Arab world as well as right here in America are taking sides and making themselves heard on Israel-Gaza conflict matters. Tensions have arisen on college and university campuses as Congress attempts to outlaw “antisemitic” speech. Erdogan has repeatedly asserted his view that Hamas militants should be considered freedom fighters rather than terrorists as defined by the US and EU. On April 20, he met with a political leader from Hamas in Istanbul who called for immediate aid to Gaza. Since that day, all export and import transactions related to Israel have been stopped altogether, according to Turkey’s trade ministry public announcement this week. Turkey will adhere strictly and decisively to these new measures until Israel allows an uninterrupted and sufficient flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.” Katz believes Erdogan has broken agreements by blocking ports used for import/export by Israeli companies. “Erdogan talks out of both sides of his mouth,” wrote someone on X about how ending trade between Turkey and Israel could just be used as cover to cover for other actions that should have already taken place but haven’t. He could’ve done much already but has done very little. “He could easily uphold Geneva Convention and break the siege by flagging Freedom Flotilla that Israel and U.S. prevented from leaving Turkey,” according to one commenter, while another advocated that all countries who oppose genocide “must follow suit and sanction Israel; that’s the only way we’ll end apartheid,” they continued.
