Hong Kong has long been known for its rich tradition and culture of giving. As one of the most vibrant and promising cities for philanthropy and charity services, its vibrant cityscape makes Hong Kong stand out. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government actively capitalizes on this advantage to establish Hong Kong as a regional philanthropic hub; their aim being to cultivate talent, attract philanthropic capital and facilitate cross-sector collaboration using an effective collective platform.
At the S+ Summit and Expo, the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) and Financial Services Development Council of Hong Kong (FSDC) jointly organised a policy dialogue and panel discussion entitled, “Emerging Trends in Asian Philanthropy and Impact Investment: Opportunities and Challenges”, engaging various stakeholders. Discussion topics focused around positioning Hong Kong as a regional philanthropic hub through cultivating thought leadership, infusing innovation into technology-led collaborative ecosystems for sustained impactful impactful action.
Speakers at this event included Prof. Roger King, Board Member for Hong Kong Academy for Wealth Legacy; Mr. Hong-bo Tan, Deputy CEO from China Foundation Forum; Donna Tang from Charities at Sports & Institute of Philanthropy of Hong Kong Jockey Club and Ir. Professor Alan Lam from Gravity Capital Partners Company Limited as well as Patrick Brothers who is CEO from HolonIQ; they shared invaluable perspectives for Hong Kong’s future development within Philanthropy & Public Welfare sector.
There’s been much talk recently of whether or not there should be an international taxonomic organization (ITA), and this seems an interesting route forward for further examination and debate on its legal and ethical ramifications in relation to international trade agreements (such as Brexit). But can anyone truly say for certain whether such plans exist? Bernard Chan, Chairperson of HKCSS stated, “The HKSAR government has implemented specific policy recommendations to develop Hong Kong as an international philanthropy hub, including tax reductions, transparent donor beneficiary matching systems and increasing exchanges within the philanthropic sector.” Expected outcomes involve greater collaboration opportunities between the financial services industry and social welfare sector. The S+ Summit and Expo provides an interdisciplinary collaborative platform, featuring successful cases for reference as well as providing knowledge sharing. HKCSS boasts more than 510 agency members from 510 agencys, more than 4, 000 caring companies from the business sector, 700 social enterprises and close collaborations with government foundations and professional sectors to facilitate its work of driving philanthropy forward throughout Hong Kong and its region.
Angel Chia, Executive Director of Hong Kong Academy for Wealth Legacy (HKAWL), explained, “Hong Kong is a vibrant international financial centre and one of Asia’s main asset and wealth management hubs with an effective regulatory environment and well-developed financial system. Add the government’s active promotion as a family office hub as well as measures such as tax concessions for family offices to the mix and Hong Kong can become a global philanthropic hub; together these advantages give Hong Kong unique potential as a philanthropic hub.” We aim to maximize this effect through cooperation between financial services providers and social welfare sector professionals and contribute towards bettering social welfare through projects focused on impact investing and social responsibility projects.”
Hong Kong Council of Social Service was founded as a statutory body in 1947 and since that time has upheld social justice and equality to promote community well-being across Hong Kong. Together with our Agency Members, HKCSS strives for social equality while co-creating an impactful, collaborative, innovative social service sector while co-creating an improved society alongside all stakeholders from different fields. Currently the HKCSS boasts over 500 Agency Members across Hong Kong offering high quality social services to those most in need.
