Green Bay is adding running back Kaleb Johnson as the Packers seek insurance behind Josh Jacobs.
CBS Sports reports that the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an agreement sending Johnson to Green Bay.
Johnson brings a three-year, $3.25 million non-guaranteed contract to the Packers.
The move gives Green Bay another option while Jacobs remains on the commissioner’s exempt list.
Jacobs was charged with two misdemeanors for battery and damage to property after an arrest.
Marshawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks are also among the Packers’ running backs.
Pittsburgh selected Johnson with the 83rd overall choice in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Steelers’ backfield changed after Mike McCarthy became head coach and the organization signed veteran Rico Dowdle to a two-year, $12.25 million deal.
Jayen Warren, who was the primary starter for Pittsburgh last season, was another established option in the team’s rushing group.
Johnson played in 10 games without a start and carried the ball 28 times for 69 yards.
He caught one of two targets for 9 yards and has not scored a touchdown.
The 23-year-old had played at Iowa, earned consensus All-American honors in 2024 and was named the Big Ten Running Back of the Year that season.
Johnson also confirmed the move on his Instagram story, while Pittsburgh is receiving a 2028 sixth-round pick.
The selection is Green Bay’s own pick rather than the one the Packers recently acquired from the Miami Dolphins.
CBS Sports characterized the trade as a low-cost addition that gives Green Bay a prospect with upside and Pittsburgh something in return for a player who might otherwise have been waived.
