Two police officers were wounded during a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building, with one suffering a non-life-threatening leg injury and the other undergoing surgery, officials said. Guardian US Crime reported that the suspect was also dead after the incident. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect.
Officials said two people were killed in the shooting at the apartment building on Wednesday. One victim died at the scene, while the second died after reaching a hospital, according to a hospital spokesperson. The gunfire came from an upper floor of the high-rise, city officials said.
A video shared on social media appeared to show police pointing rifles toward an apartment tower near the Minneapolis convention center. Officers went inside after receiving 911 calls and followed the sound of the shots, officials said. They encountered a haze inside the building that reduced their ability to see.
The Minneapolis police department and mayor Jacob Frey told people to avoid the nearby Loring Park neighborhood. The warning concerned a densely populated area close to the shooting site. Julius Bailey, who was outside his apartment building, said he heard gunfire and saw a resident he recognized carrying a pistol.
Bailey said he heard a woman scream before fleeing, and he described the man as someone known for displaying his weapon. He also said he had tried to keep away from that resident since moving into the building in June. Chris Miller, another resident, said he heard a quick burst of shots and ran outside.
Miller said he believed he knew who was responsible and had earlier reported to building management that he encountered someone with a handgun in a hallway. Minnesota governor Tim Walz said law enforcement was working to protect people in Downtown Minneapolis and that Minnesota was praying for first responders. The FBI has offered resources to assist officers at the scene, director Kash Patel said in an X post. The Associated Press contributed reporting.
