‘We have to stick together’

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ eight-year stay in the Premier League came to a crushing, if inevitable, end on Saturday evening.

A 3–0 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road left the Old Gold rooted to the bottom of the table, with results elsewhere officially confirming their return to the Championship for the first time since 2018.

Manager Rob Edwards, who replaced Vitor Pereira in November, has now been relegated with Luton and Wolves but wants to see a reaction.

He said: “First of all, we have to stick together. There’s five more Premier League matches to go and it’s up to us to try and find some results, because ultimately that’s what we want.

“If we can do that, it’s going to reflect better on us as a club and as individuals.

“The big moments are what have gone against us. I get the frustration and the anger today, because it has been a really hard season for everybody.

“I completely understand that, but there’s not an attitude problem from the group, there’s not a lack of will or desire or running, but we are making and have made too many errors. At this level, you can’t do that.”

Defeat at Elland Road: A Familiar Script

Two goals in just two minutes for Leeds – an acrobatic overhead kick from James Justin and a clinical finish from Noah Okafor – stunned the visitors before the 20-minute mark.

Despite a spirited second-half push where Adam Armstrong saw a goal ruled out for offside and Rodrigo Gomes missed a gilt-edged chance, Wolves’ fate was sealed in stoppage time. Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a late penalty after Hugo Bueno was judged to have committed a foul in the box.
