Villarreal thank Marcelino ‘from the bottom of our hearts’ as coach’s exit confirmed

Villarreal have confirmed coach Marcelino will leave the club at the end of the season.

Marcelino took over for a second spell in charge in November 2023 and has enjoyed great success with the Yellow Submarine.

He led them to Champions League qualification last season and has achieved that feat again this term, with Villarreal third in LaLiga with four games to play.

A statement from the club read: “Villarreal CF and Marcelino Garcia Toral will part ways at the end of the current campaign. The coach will bring his second spell at the club to a close after returning in 2023, having secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League for a second consecutive season, for the first time in the club’s history.

“Villarreal CF would like to publicly thank Marcelino and his coaching staff for their professionalism, commitment and hard work since their arrival, as well as their daily dedication and contribution to the club’s sporting development across the seven seasons he has been in charge over two spells from 2013 to 2016 and from 2023 to 2026. He has become the coach with the most matches in the club’s history and will finish with 298 games in all competitions, while also holding the record for most wins with 145 to date.

“During his time on the Villarreal CF bench, Marcelino has achieved significant milestones, including leading the club back to LaLiga in 2013 and securing five European qualifications across the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, reaching the semi-finals in 2016, as well as the Copa del Rey semi-finals in 2015.

“Villarreal CF will pay tribute to him in the final LaLiga match of the season against Atlético de Madrid, which will also serve as a celebration with the fans at Estadio de la Cerámica following UEFA Champions League qualification.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Marce. Thank you for everything you have given to this club and its supporters. We wish you all the best in your future sporting projects.”
