S&P 500 gains 1% as oil prices dip

Closing changes on Monday:

  • S&P 500 +1.0%
  • DJIA +0.8%
  • Nasdaq Comp +1.2%
  • Russell 2000 +1.0%

Dollar Tree was the top performer in the S&P 500 on better guidance as it gained 6.4%. Other gainers included travel names like airlines and cruise ships. Laggards included CF Industries, which is a fertilizer name that had benefited from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The theme in today’s trade was clear: De-escalation is coming. The problem with that theory is that evidence so far is flimsy and based more on hope and vibes than anything solid.

Other big stock market winners included META up 2.3% on a report about laying off 20% of the staff and Nebius up 15% on a deal with Meta.
