It has been a transformative offseason in the Pacific Northwest as the Seattle Seahawks have undergone a massive shakeup this offseason by signing Sam Darnold to replace Geno Smith at quarterback, who was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders, and also, trading star wide receiver DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With ten picks in the upcoming draft, Seattle has plenty of ammo to revamp this roster, and the team’s general manager recently shared his honest thoughts about the upcoming draft class.
The Seahawks shared a roundup of recent happenings on their team website recently, which included comments from GM John Schneider about the upcoming class and his thoughts on the quarterback market.
“I’d be careful when you hear people say this isn’t a great draft [for quarterbacks]. I think it depends on the team, the player, the quarterback, how you’re going to acquire him, where you’re going to acquire him,” Schneider said.
It’s interesting that Schneider brought up quarterbacks at all after signing Sam Darnold to a nine-figure contract in free agency, as perhaps he has his eyes on somebody on the second or third day of the draft who could sit and learn behind Darnold for a year or two and eventually be the next franchise QB.
Seattle has two picks in the second, third, fifth, and seventh rounds, so there is room to take a flier on a potential high-upside talent if somebody jumps out.
As great as Darnold was this past season, nobody expected it, and he ended the season on a whimper by being sacked nine times in a Wild-Card loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
He hasn’t done enough for any team to be willing to be completely sold on him long-term, so it makes sense why the Seahawks are potentially interested in some mid-round quarterbacks.
Seattle isn’t the first team anyone would think of as a potential QB landing spot in this draft, but this is something worth putting a pin in.
There could be something there.
