Rob Gronkowski Sounds Off On Abdul Carter For Jersey Request

The New York Giants got a potential new star, but as talented as Abdul Carter is, he hasn’t done anything in the NFL yet.

That’s why Rob Gronkowski liked Lawrence Taylor’s decision not to allow Carter to wear his No. 56.

The legendary tight end claimed that Carter had a lot of nerve trying to wear Taylor’s retired jersey.

“Was he serious, asking for LT’s number? Yeah, you were a high draft pick, but LT is an absolute legend. The best to do it, one of the best defenders of all time … like, you gotta prove yourself. That’s crazy just asking for LT’s number and I’m glad that LT shut him down like that,” Gronkowski said, via Dov Kleiman.

Of course, no one argues that Carter could also have a Hall of Fame career.

But even if that is the case, he most likely would still fall short of Taylor.

Former Giants quarterback Phil Simms offered to unretire his No. 11 jersey, but his family nixed that.

Jersey numbers are retired by a franchise for a reason, and as much as Carter would love to carry on a legacy, he has to earn that right on the field.

Many so-called can’t-miss talents end up being busts, either because of the team, their work ethic, health, bad luck or poor scouting.

It doesn’t matter how talented you are or how high you were drafted, everything you did before making the NFL is meaningless.
