Real Madrid were today fined €15,000 and handed a suspended partial stadium closure after a fan was spotted making a Nazi salute prior to the Champions League game against Benfica last week.
The supporter was caught on camera making the gesture and kicked out by security staff before Madrid’s 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu that completed a 3-1 aggregate triumph and propelled them into a round of 16 tie with Manchester City.
“Real Madrid condemns this type of gesture and expression that incites violence and hatred in sports and society,” the club said at the time.
The partial stadium closure is for 500 seats in the lower south stand for one UEFA club fixture but is suspended for one year.
The game was won by a late goal from Vinicius Jr, who alleged he was racially abused by Benfica’s Guanluca Prestianni during the first leg in Lisbon on February 17.
Argentine forward Prestianni, who denies any wrongdoing, missed the Bernabeu clash due to a provisional UEFA ban.
Madrid are in La Liga action tonight when they go to Celta Vigo.
