Prior to Trump US Com Sec Lutnick said 35% Canada tariff “surely in the cards”

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Thursday that a 35% tariff on all Canadian goods not covered by the USMCA remains firmly on the table, with the August 1 deadline set by President Donald Trump fast approaching.

Speaking on Fox Business Network’s Kudlow, Lutnick suggested the door isn’t fully closed — but the ball is in Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s court.

“If he makes that call, turns on the charm, and backs off the retaliation — stops the silliness — maybe the president will ease up,” Lutnick said. “But right now, that 35% tariff letter he sent? It’s surely in the cards.”
