The New England Patriots have emerged as one of the most dangerous teams in the league following their 27-14 victory over the New York Jets on Thursday night. The win improved their record to 9-2 and extended their winning streak to eight games, the longest active run in the NFL.
Mike Vrabel’s impact since taking over as head coach has transformed the culture in Foxborough, but Drake Maye‘s development has been equally significant in driving the turnaround. Vrabel had multiple coaching opportunities available during last year’s cycle, but chose New England. Following Thursday’s victory, he explained on Amazon’s postgame show that the 23-year-old quarterback played a major role in his decision.
“We wanted to put a program around these players. I came here because of the familiarity [and] I came here because of Drake [Maye]. I knew what he would be, and it was important for me to come here,” Vrabel said, per Mike Kedlick.

Maye addressed the relationship from his perspective as well, crediting Vrabel’s influence on his growth both on and off the field. He discussed the consistent feedback, late-night messages, and the energy Vrabel brings to the building each day.
The entire locker room has responded to that approach, and Maye made clear he values playing under Vrabel’s system, per NBC Sports. Maye’s performance against the Jets reinforced the growing conversation around his MVP candidacy. He completed 25 of 34 pass attempts for 281 yards with one passing touchdown.
His season numbers support those discussions as he currently ranks sixth in passing yards per game at 257.8 while sitting tied for second in touchdown passes with 20. His passer rating of 113.2 places him fifth among qualifying quarterbacks through 11 weeks.
