Mbappe withdraws from France squad with ankle injury

The Real Madrid star is undergoing tests after picking up an issue against Ukraine

Kylian Mbappe has pulled out of the France squad and will return to Madrid for medical tests on an ankle problem, the French Football Federation announced on Friday.

The 26-year-old Real Madrid striker struck twice in Thursday’s win over Ukraine in Paris, securing France’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup and taking his personal tally to 400 career goals.

However, he will not be involved in Sunday’s trip to Azerbaijan.

The decision for him to leave the national camp was made jointly by Didier Deschamps and Real Madrid’s medical team, who agreed that the persistent swelling and discomfort in his ankle required further assessment.

He is scheduled to undergo scans in Madrid later on Friday, though sources have indicated to ESPN that the issue is not believed to be serious.

The update on Mbappe follows confirmation that another Madrid player, midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, has also exited the France camp after picking up a minor muscle problem.

Real Madrid are due to face Elche on November 23, followed by a Champions League fixture away to Olympiacos on November 26.
