Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton joins Lyon for £15m

Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton has joined Ligue 1 side Lyon for a fee of £15m.

The 22-year-old, who progressed through the Reds academy to make his senior debut in 2021, made 14 appearances across all competitions, and spent some time on loan in the Championship with Hull and Blackburn.

However, the England U21 international, who was part of Lee Carsley’s squad that successfully defended their European Championship crown this summer, found consistent game time at the Anfield club limited.

He now joins a Lyon team who have endured a turbulent few months. They were initially demoted to France’s second tier because of poor finances but were then reinstated to the top flight after winning their appeal.

Liverpool’s spending in the summer transfer market has already exceeded £250m, with the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Armin Pecsi all coming through the door.

Morton’s move away comes following the departure of Jarrell Quansah – another academy graduate – to Bayer Leverkusen for £35m last month.

The sale of academy products, such as Morton and Quansah, are vital in order for clubs to abide by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Luis Diaz, Caoimhin Kelleher and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also all left Liverpool this summer.
