Liverpool edge closer to major signing after beating off competition from Manchester United and Newcastle

Eintracht Frankfurt have rejected Liverpool’s initial offer for striker Hugo Ekitike.

The Premier League champions have reportedly offered around €80million (£69m) for the Frenchman, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester United were also interested while Newcastle, who also saw a bid for Ekitike rebuffed by Eintracht, have now dropped out of the race.

The upshot means Alexander Isak, who was Liverpool’s first choice, is now likely to stay on Tyneside with Arne Slot retraining his full attention on bolstering his forward line with 23-year-old Ekitike.

The player is only interested in a move to Anfield and personal terms are also reportedly agreed.

Ekitike to strengthen Liverpool striking options

Should the deal go through, Ekitike would bolster a forward line depleted by the tragic death of Diogo Jota. Darwin Nunez is also expected to leave with clubs in Saudi Arabia monitoring the Uruguay forward’s situation.

Liverpool have already made waves in the transfer market this summer, setting a club record by signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100 million, with a further £16 million potentially due in add-ons.

They have also rejected a €67.5million (£58m) offer from Bayern Munich for Colombian winger Luis Diaz, who has flirted with the idea of leaving Anfield for a fresh challenge.
