The San Francisco 49ers’ offseason has been dealt another blow, as new information emerges about a key defensive player’s condition.
The team is still processing their disappointing loss to the Arizona Cardinals in last season’s finale, but now they’re facing a more concerning long-term challenge.
Safety Malik Mustapha suffered a right ACL injury during that final game that required surgical intervention.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently shared an update on X, highlighting the significance of this setback for both player and team:
“Delayed but significant injury news: 49ers safety Malik Mustapha, who was believed to be the replacement for free-agent safety loss Talanoa Hufanga, tore his ACL during San Francisco’s regular-season finale and is not expected to be ready for the start of the 2025 season,” Schefter wrote.

What makes this situation particularly worrisome is that it’s the same ACL that Mustapha previously tore while playing at Wake Forest in January 2022.
The San Francisco 49ers have taken steps to address their safety depth this offseason, acquiring Richie Grant from the Atlanta Falcons and Jason Pinnock from the New York Giants.
While both players provide solid options, fifth-round pick Marques Sigle from Kansas State might now find himself with unexpected early opportunities.
This latest development compounds an already difficult injury situation for the 49ers, who saw their roster decimated throughout last season.
Mustapha’s injury, sustained during their final game against Arizona, adds yet another name to their extensive injury list.
Selected in the fourth round (No. 124 overall) last year, Mustapha quickly became an important contributor for the 49ers.
He appeared in 16 games, starting 12 of them, while accumulating 72 total tackles and one interception in his rookie campaign.
