The Washington Commanders were the most surprising team in the NFL last season. Led by rookie Jayden Daniels, they made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game.

This season, the quarterback has suffered multiple injuries, but even when he has been able to play, they have struggled to win games. With that in mind, insider Nicki Jhabvala revealed a troubling stat about the Commanders’ defense.

“The Commanders have the worst passing yards differential in the league through Sunday, at minus-701. No defense has allowed a better opponent passer rating (112.7) or more yards per attempt (8.9) than Washington,” Jhabvala wrote on X.

A lot was said of the Commanders’ need to bolster their pass rush this offseason. Unsurprisingly, signing veteran Von Miller at this point in his career wasn’t the difference-making move they needed.

Rookie cornerback Trey Amos has looked solid at times, but the secondary continues to struggle. Mike Sainrsitil and Marshon Lattimore have yet to find their best level.

The Commanders added some new players to the mix, but they now have one of the oldest teams in the league. That’s not going to get the job done at the highest level.

All things considered, it might be time to hit the drawing board again. The Commanders have the right foundation on offense and could return as a force once they’re back at full strength, but the defense needs some retooling.
