T.J. Watt sent Steeler Nation into a frenzy last week with nothing more than a peace sign.
While theories multiplied online, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport stepped in to provide some much-needed perspective on the situation.
During his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Rapoport addressed the brewing speculation, suggesting that Watt is indeed due for a significant salary adjustment following Myles Garrett’s recent extension.
However, he believes the Pittsburgh Steelers will be the ones handling that pay increase, though no timeline has been established.
“A lot of times these deals happen right before training camp, because, remember, the Steelers have a policy of not negotiating into the season. So right before training camp is a time, and then right before the season is a time, like, there have been deals that have gotten done in Pittsburgh, I think, like the Saturday night before the season. So there is time,” Rapoport explained.
“A lot of times these deals happen right before Training Camp and there is time to get a TJ Watt deal done..
I wouldn’t be surprised if TJ Watt was shooting for more money than Myles Garrett..
I would guess that Micah Parsons is doing the same” ~ @RapSheet #PMSLive https://t.co/Nb6DfT9ni5 pic.twitter.com/mWQZWj6zKB

The notion of Pittsburgh and Watt going separate ways seems highly unlikely given the organization’s history with retaining their elite talents.
The star linebacker’s cryptic Instagram post sparked immediate speculation across social media platforms, with fans anxiously dissecting what the simple gesture might mean.
Was he signaling farewell to Pittsburgh? Hinting at contract frustrations? Or was it simply an innocent photo being overanalyzed?
The Steelers typically find ways to keep their stars when they commit to a player, even if negotiations stretch longer than fans might prefer.
Watt’s next contract will likely aim to eclipse Garrett’s recent deal, a target that seems reasonable given his consistent production.
Both players stand among the NFL’s premier pass rushers with comparable statistical output across recent seasons.
The coming months will reveal whether Watt holds firm for market-setting money or finds a middle ground with the organization.
