Howe is ‘in the best possible hands’ says assistant Tindall

Newcastle United say manager Eddie Howe is ‘in the best possible hands’ as he recovers from pneumonia in hospital.

Howe, 47, missed Sunday’s 4-1 win against Manchester United and will also miss Wednesday’s game in hand against Crystal Palace, with no set date for his return.

Assistant Jason Tindall will take charge of the side again at St James’ Park against the Eagles.

He said: “We know that Eddie is in the best possible hands and he will be back as soon as he feels he is ready to come back 100% to lead the team.

“Of course, your health is the most important thing and that is why it’s so important that when Eddie decides to come back, he comes back and is able to lead the team like he does day in day out, fully recovered. And I am sure he will do that.

“We shared a few text messages yesterday. The most important thing for the manager now is to rest and recover and probably not worry too much about anything other than making sure he is recovering as quickly as possible.

“Hopefully we can have him here as our leader as soon as possible but only when he is 100% right to do so.”

Newcastle would move above Nottingham Forest into third in the Premier League table with victory on Wednesday, but Palace are in contention for European football themselves after a fine run of form.

Tindall said: “We are not thinking about anything other than preparations for tomorrow night to deliver a performance that we know we need to deliver to be good enough to win the game.

“We know that Crystal Palace are in fantastic form. Saturday was only their second defeat on the road in 15 games. They don’t concede too many goals. It’s going to be a really, really difficult challenge for us. They are a dangerous side.

“But if we can go out and deliver performances like the weekend, hopefully that will go a long way in helping us getting the points that we want.”
