Haaland and Manchester City ‘not afraid’ of punishment as FFP charge verdict draws near

Erling Haaland is confident in Manchester City’s situation despite the club facing 115 Premier League charges for financial breaches.

The striker admits he is not afraid of punishment but also pointed to his long-term commitment with a 9.5-year contract as a sign of trust in the club.

Haaland signed the unprecedented deal in January, making it the longest contract ever agreed by a major club, even as City faced uncertainty over potential consequences such as a heavy fine or significant points deduction.

The hearings, which began in September, wrapped up in December, with manager Pep Guardiola anticipating a verdict by the end of March.

However, when asked during a press conference in Norway on Friday if he was concerned about the situation, Haaland doubled down his trust in the club.

“I don’t do that, obviously, when I sign a 9.5-year contract,” Haaland stated ahead of Norway’s World Cup qualifier against Moldova.

“I’ve said 300 times why I signed the contract. I talked to the club, got a good feeling and agreed to it in the end. That’s why.”

While Haaland has not replicated his past season’s extraordinary performances, he remains a key figure for City in what has been a challenging campaign. The team has fallen out of the Premier League title race and has also exited the Champions League.

“That’s how it is sometimes,” said the 24-year-old, who has scored 29 goals for City this season.

“It’s been different when you’ve won the Premier League both years and not been in the title race. But you can’t win every year.

“Now it’s about securing a Champions League place, and do something you can do something about: Win the FA Cup.”
