The New England Patriots will most likely be in the mix for an offensive tackle in the first round of the NFL Draft.
With that in consideration, some experts, such as ESPN’s Field Yates and Mel Kiper Jr., have them going with LSU star Will Campbell.
Then again, some scouts have expressed concerns about Campbell’s short arm length.
Some believe he will be better suited to play at guard instead of tackle at the next level.
Nevertheless, former NFL player Logan Mankins told ESPN that as much as having long arms can be an advantage against defensive ends, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Campbell will struggle at the next level:
“At tackle, some of those D-ends, you look at their arms and ‘holy smokes’ — they’re super long. You want to keep those guys away from you. The longer the arms the better,” Mankins said. “But there’s also guys with shorter arms who had great careers and were great football players. It’s a bonus to have the long arms, but the guys that know how to play well, they figure it out if they have a little bit of shorter arms.”
Campbell dominated SEC competition in college, and while NFL players are obviously bigger, stronger, and at times more talented, that is usually a good indicator for success in the pros.
The Patriots may have already found their quarterback for the future, but that’s not enough to get back to their winning ways.
Drake Maye looked sharp in his first season despite playing behind a subpar offensive line, so they can now make sure that he’s not running for his life on every dropback.
If the Patriots aren’t so sure about Campbell because of this seemingly minor detail, they could perhaps trade back a couple of spots and land someone like Armand Membou.
Then again, there’s nothing not to like about Campbell’s tape, and he’s the highest-ranked OT in this class for a reason.
