Diogo Costa dedicates Porto title win to Diogo Jota

Diogo Costa dedicated Porto‘s Primeira Liga title win to former team-mate Diogo Jota after they secured the crown with a 1-0 victory over Alverca on Saturday.

Jan Bednarek scored the only goal of the game to clinch the title in front of their home fans at Estadio do Dragao after both Benfica and Sporting CP dropped points.

Afterwards as they celebrated the title, Costa donned a Porto shirt bearing the name of former Porto, Wolves and Liverpool forward Jota, who was tragically killed in a car accident that also claimed the life of his brother Andre Silva last July.

Costa’s tribute was shared on Instagram by Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso.

Speaking to a reporter, Costa, who played alongside Jota for Portugal, said: “[This is for] our Portista [Porto fan] and dear Diogo Jota and his brother. For me, he was a national team-mate, but he also played here.

“I knew he was a huge Portista and we want to dedicate this league trophy to him, his brother and their family.”

Last year was an emotional one for Porto, whose legendary former president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa died in February 2025. Former defender Jorge Costa, who was part of the side that won the Champions League in 2004 and took over as director of football in 2024, died at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club’s training ground in August last year.

“There’s so much to say, so much to remember,” Costa added in an interview with Sport TV. “Our Jorge, our president, personally, Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva… It’s a mix of sadness and happiness at the same time.

“This morning, when I woke up, I felt, it was almost as if I knew something good was going to happen, because we deserve it and I think we did everything for it.”
