Colts Have Released Veteran Kicker

The Indianapolis Colts made another surprising move this offseason.

Giving Daniel Jones $17 million wasn’t the only eyebrow-raising financial decision they made.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, they just moved on from Matt Gay.

They released the 31-year-old kicker just two years after signing him to a big four-year contract.

They signed him in 2023 right after he won the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams, giving him a $22.5 million contract.

That was the most lucrative deal for a free-agent kicker at the time.

Unfortunately, he was never at his best in Indianapolis.

He converted just 64 of 78 field goal attempts (82.1%) over the past couple of seasons, including just 11 of 22 from 50 yards or longer.

Prior to joining the Colts, he was a 74% kicker from at least 50 yards, including 12 of 15 in three seasons with Sean McVay’s team.

The veteran kicker has also struggled with injuries since he arrived in Indianapolis, and he even had to get surgery during the 2024 preseason to fix a hernia injury.

The Colts were used to having steady and reliable production on special teams after having the legendary Adam Vinatieri for 14 years.

They’ve failed to find a suitable replacement since he left the premises in 2019, and reliable kickers seem to be difficult to find in today’s game.
