Bill Belichick has almost completed his first season as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels and remains committed to the program. The six-time Super Bowl champion has publicly rejected speculation about returning to the NFL, yet reports indicate at least two franchises plan to pursue interviews with him.

Not everyone believes that would be a wise move. Analyst Colin Cowherd recently weighed in on the ongoing conversation, arguing against NFL teams considering Belichick for a head coaching position.

“There is a headline, a story, that NFL teams are eyeing Bill Belichick. I would not hire Belichick. Go look at his Carolina staff – friends and family. Go look at his last New England staff – retreads,” Cowherd said.

Several factors complicate a potential NFL return for Belichick. At 73, he will turn 74 in April, and any team interested would need to address his demand for complete roster control, the same authority structure he maintained with the New England Patriots.

Cowherd has criticized Belichick’s North Carolina tenure for lacking innovation in offensive strategy relative to modern NFL coaching trends. The analyst suggested that teams prioritizing a defensive-minded coach explore other options.

He highlighted Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, Houston Texans’ head coach DeMeco Ryans, Seattle Seahawks’ head coach Mike Macdonald, and Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as viable alternatives.

Speculation intensified over a month ago when reports surfaced about Belichick and North Carolina discussing a potential midseason buyout. Both the coach and the university quickly dismissed those claims. Belichick affirmed his focus on building the program, while UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham reinforced the school’s full commitment to Belichick and the direction of the football program.
