Chris Wilder has been reappointed as Sheffield United manager following the sacking of Ruben Selles on Sunday.

The 57-year-old, a lifelong Blade, steps back into the dugout for a third time with the club rooted to the bottom of the Championship, having lost all five of their opening league fixtures.

Selles’ departure came in the aftermath of Friday’s heavy 5-0 defeat at Ipswich, which left United searching for an alternative.

Wilder, who has previously clashed with ownership over recruitment strategy, is understood to have been handed greater authority this time around.

The club’s recent experiment with AI-driven player signings has so far produced disappointing results.

A former Sheffield United defender, Wilder has two playing spells and now three managerial stints to his name.

He first took charge in 2016, guiding the Blades to the Premier League in 2019. After leaving in 2021, he returned in 2023, but was dismissed three months ago following a playoff final defeat to Sunderland.

A message from the Sheffield United board on their website read: “Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion.

“While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.

“Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season.

“We would like to thank Ruben Selles for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club. Responsibility for recent results lies with us as owners, and we remain fully committed to supporting the team and pursuing promotion.”
