Chargers place rookie running back Hampton on injured reserve

The Los Angeles Chargers have placed rookie running back Omarion Hampton on injured reserve, sidelining the first-round pick for at least four games.

Hampton sustained an ankle injury as the Chargers suffered a 27-10 home loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday, a result that dropped them to 3-2.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced Hampton would go to IR on Monday. However, he did not confirm how long the former North Carolina standout, who was seen in a walking boot after the game, would need to recover.

More injury woe for the Chargers

He will definitely miss Sunday’s road game with the Miami Dolphins, as well as meetings with the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans.

Hampton has excelled through the first five weeks of his rookie season, rushing for 314 yards and two touchdowns at an average of 4.8 yards per attempt. He also has 136 receiving yards to his name.

Hassan Haskins will likely get the bulk of the carries in Hampton’s absence as the Chargers continue to battle injuries.

Left tackle Joe Alt missed the defeat to Washington with an ankle issue. Right tackle Rashawn Slater is out for the season, while veteran pass rusher Khalil Mack has missed the last three games having been placed on injured reserve with an elbow injury sustained in Week 2.
