Carrick praises Mainoo and tips midfielder for England recall

Kobbie Mainoo has been instrumental in Manchester United’s improvement under Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick says there is “so much more to come” from Kobbie Mainoo despite his return to prominence at Manchester United.

Mainoo was ostracised by former boss Ruben Amorim but has started all nine Premier League games since Carrick was placed in interim charge.

The 20-year-old has thrived with his midfield partnership with experienced Brazilian Casemiro forming a platform for the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha to express themselves further forward.

Despite his impressive form, Carrick is confident the academy product will get even better in the years to come.

“He can always improve on a lot of things, that’s the age he’s at for starters,” he said. “There’s so much more to come and develop and that’s just natural, that’s not a negative on Kobbie, that just the stage he’s in in his career, so hopefully he has got a lot of layers to improve and keep developing on that.

“I think he’s done really well. Not having a lot of football for a period of time to come in and play a run of games and find your rhythm. I think he did that really quickly and there’s a natural kind of flow really and I thought he was really good again on the weekend [against Aston Villa].

“Putting in a performance where he did a little bit of everything and controlled the game and spells when he had to defend and it was really impressive.”

Carrick hoping Manchester United trio get England call

England boss Thomas Tuchel names his England squad for the pre-World Cup friendlies against Japan and Uruguay on Friday and Carrick is hoping to see Mainoo and his United team-mates Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire handed recalls.

“I haven’t been in touch (with Tuchel), no,” said Carrick. “For the boys, I’d love to see them picked for this one and obviously picked for the summer.

“I don’t have any influence on that but certainly the boys, the way they’re playing, I think they’ve put themselves right in the conversation and right in the picture and given themselves a chance.

“So, we’ll see. I literally don’t know any more than you on that one.

“But the boys are definitely playing well enough to warrant a place, for sure. It’s just not my decision so we’ll have to wait and see.”

Manchester United head to Bournemouth on Friday night

Tuchel has not picked a United player in a Three Lions squad since taking over at the start of last year.

The German will get the chance to monitor their progress when United go to Bournemouth on Friday night looking to strengthen their grip on third place in the Premier League table.

Carrick said: “It’s a tough game, a tough place to go. They’re on a really good run of form, it’s a difficult game. They are a really well-coached team and have good energy, so we know we’ll be in for a game.”

Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Patrick Dorgu are not available for the trip to the South Coast but Noussair Mazraoui is expected to have recovered from illness.
