Canadian trade Minister LeBlanc. Not so fast. Does not see a trade deal imminently

Canada trade minister LeBlanc says:

  • Canadian Trade Minister LeBlanc says he is surprised by reports suggesting Canada and the U.S. are close to finalizing a trade deal.

  • Cautions that it would be overly optimistic to expect an agreement within just a few days.

Reports from the Globe and Mail suggest that a U.S.–Canada trade deal could be ready for approval at the upcoming APEC summit, though progress remains limited to specific sectors. While both sides appear close to agreements on steel, aluminum, and energy, the U.S. is not yet prepared to finalize deals covering autos or softwood lumber. A signing on the narrower trade package could occur later this month.
