Cam Newton Names Which QB Has The Most To Prove

The Jacksonville Jaguars enter 2025 with their franchise quarterback facing perhaps the most scrutinized season of his young career.

Trevor Lawrence has dealt with coaching changes, injuries, and offensive line struggles throughout his first four NFL campaigns. None of those excuses will matter much this year.

Lawrence sits at the top of many lists regarding players with the most to prove.

Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton recently highlighted just how much pressure the fourth-year signal caller faces.

“He’s getting paid as a top 5 quarterback with bottom 5 quarterback production, postseason. […] When we’re looking at Trevor Lawrence and the skill set that he possesses, there’s no way he doesn’t have a playoff appearance. And I understand this to be true: he can’t get there alone, and they need other determining factors to up their ante, but you got skill around you now. What you gonna do?” Newton said.

The numbers back up Newton’s assessment. Lawrence signed a five-year, $275 million extension last June that briefly made him the NFL’s highest-paid player alongside Joe Burrow.

That contract came with massive expectations that have yet to be fulfilled.

Lawrence reached the Pro Bowl as an alternate during his second season but hasn’t matched that production since.

Injuries derailed his 2024 campaign, limiting him to just 10 games while dealing with shoulder problems and a concussion. The Jaguars managed only two wins in his 10 starts.

Jacksonville has surrounded Lawrence with new pieces this offseason.

Head coach Liam Coen takes over the offense while two-way rookie Travis Hunter adds another weapon. The supporting cast appears stronger than in previous years.

Lawrence still carries the label of a potential franchise quarterback despite four seasons of mixed results.

His health and consistency will determine whether Jacksonville can finally break through as a legitimate contender.

The talent remains evident, but time is running short for the former first overall pick to justify his massive contract and transform a struggling franchise into a winner.
