Brian Schottenheimer Gets Honest About Cowboys’ Approach With No. 12 Pick

The Brian Schottenheimer era is underway for the Dallas Cowboys.

The first-year head coach will have his work cut out for him, as the team will once again be asked to compete despite not having a high-end roster.

Of course, that can begin to change with the 2025 NFL Draft.

When asked about the team’s plans at No. 12, Schottenheimer claimed that they didn’t want to be in a position to have such a high draft pick again, which is why they were going to look for difference-makers there (via Jon Machota).

He then talked about wide receivers vs. cornerbacks and defensive ends vs. offensive tackles to explain his point and talk about players who might make a bigger impact because of their ability to dominate in one-on-one situations.

The Cowboys will have no shortage of options to find difference-makers at No. 12.

But judging by the head coach’s words, they will go after someone who can dominate when isolated, which all but rules out a cornerback, running back, or tackle.

That leaves defensive ends and wide receivers as the likeliest choices for Jerry Jones’s team.

That would make some sense, given that they don’t have anyone opposite CeeDee Lamb to be a potential factor in the passing game, and they could use some more help opposite Micah Parsons as well.

Of course, that will also depend on what other teams do and who’s available by the time they’re on the clock, but it seems like they have a clear plan right now.
