As Trump and his advisers consider candidates to replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, one key uncertainty looms: Powell may not leave the central bank next year.

While Powell’s term as chair ends in May, he has yet to indicate whether he will fully step down or remain on the Fed’s board, where his term as governor runs until January 2028.
