Bayern midfielder Goretzka to leave at the end of the season

Leon Goretzka will leave Bayern Munich when his contract expires at the end of the season, the club confirmed this morning.

The Germany midfielder joined Bayern from Schalke in 2018 and has made nearly 300 appearances for the club.

He has won the Bundesliga six times with Bayern as well as the Champions League in 2020 but has opted for a new challenge.

Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund said: “Leon feels very comfortable in this club and in this team. Therefore, despite some top-class offers, he has decided to stay here until the end of the season.

“After open and constructive discussions, we agreed together that he would look for a different challenge from the summer. He will then have been at FC Bayern for eight years – very successful years with an extremely strong person and player. Until the summer, Leon wants to give everything to celebrate as many titles as possible with the team.”

It is likely Goretzka will end his time in Bavaria with another Bundesliga title. Vincent Kompany’s side are eight points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund with 15 games to go.
