Denzel Clarke returned to Major League action Tuesday, but the team’s injury situation worsened when Tommy White left its game at Globe Life Field. MLB News reported that Clarke was reinstated from the 60-day injured list for his first Major League appearance since April 20. The return came before White’s early departure, adding another health concern to a team already carrying a crowded injured list. White, a 23-year-old rookie, appeared uncomfortable after swinging at a pitch from MacKenzie Gore during Tuesday night’s game.
He turned toward his left side, then spoke briefly with head athletic trainer Jeff Collins and manager Mark Kotsay before leaving the field. Michael Stefanic replaced White during the at-bat, and the team later identified the issue as lower back tightness. The injury occurred as Clarke was making his return, giving the team one encouraging development and one new concern on the same night. The injured list still contains 11 players, including Luis Severino and several members of the Opening Day starting group.
White could join that list if the back problem proves serious enough to keep him out. His opportunity in the big leagues came largely because injuries had opened a place for him. White had produced a .255 batting average through his first 39 games, showing he could contribute while filling that opening. An extended absence would leave the team considering ways to cover third base, White’s primary position.
Zack Gelof, Max Muncy and Darell Hernaiz are among the active-roster possibilities mentioned for that role. The team could also look to Triple-A Las Vegas, where Joey Meneses was identified as another possible infield option. For now, the team has announced the back condition but has not provided a timetable for White’s return. The severity of the injury will determine whether Tuesday’s exit becomes another longer-term roster problem.
