The New York Giants may have found their next star.
Jaxson Dart looked like a legitimate NFL starting quarterback in three preseason games, and while the bulk of that work came against backups, it wasn’t solely about the numbers.
He looked poised, calm and in control of the offense, and the coaching staff was quite satisfied with what they saw.
That’s why Seth Walder of ESPN believes the Giants want Dart to start games this season and that it won’t be long before he does so.
“QB Jaxson Dart will make his first start no later than Week 5. There has been buzz around Dart’s preseason, and I can’t imagine the Giants are too excited to cling to the [Russell] Wilson era longer than they have to with a first-round QB waiting in the wings. Facing the [New Orleans] Saints in Week 5 could be a nice soft landing for Dart to begin his NFL career,” Walder wrote.
Head coach Brian Daboll put the brakes on the Dart hype by being non-committal to the media about his role.
The organization has talked about taking things slowly with the first-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft to make sure he is in a position to succeed.
It would make sense for him to sit out the year and learn from veterans Wilson and Jameis Winston.
Nevertheless, if Dart continues to develop, and Wilson struggles as he has since leaving the Seattle Seahawks, perhaps the Giants will reconsider that vision.
Dart was a polarizing prospect coming out of Ole Miss, as some scouts said he had the most arm talent in the class but looked a little raw.
The preseason is just the preseason, and it’s never wise to overreact.
But Dart seemed to be ahead of schedule, so perhaps it’s not far-fetched to think he can become the starter at some point this season.
