Analyst Names Rookie Defender Among Dolphins’ ‘Biggest Surprises’

The Miami Dolphins may have landed one of the steals of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Not many fifth-round picks become a starter, let alone as a rookie.

But cornerback Jason Marshall Jr., the No. 150 overall pick, has turned heads since he arrived.

“One of the biggest surprises of the past two weeks has been Dolphins CB Jason Marshall Jr., who went from third string CB to starting nickel in the span of 10 days. Quite an accomplishment,” Omar Kelly wrote on X.

The Dolphins needed help at nickel cornerback, and Marshall might be the answer.

He went from potentially not making the roster to becoming the starter, for very good reasons.

Of course, losing incumbent starter Kader Kohou to a season-ending injury had something to do with it, but Marshall’s hard work did not go unnoticed.

The Dolphins were so impressed by his performance and work ethic that they chose to cut ties with recently added veteran Mike Hilton.

Marshall was once considered to be a five-star recruit, so the talent and physical tools were there.

However, he wasn’t very consistent at the University of Florida, causing his draft stock to fall.

The Dolphins chose to select him after watching him post a 4.49-second 40-yard dash and a 1.55 10-yard split at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine.

Miami will be facing scrutiny from the start of the season, with Mike McDaniel the favorite to be the first head coach to be fired.

Hopefully for him, this rookie fifth-round pick will help him keep his job.
