Youngsters shine as Reds win first of two friendlies

Teenager Rio Ngumoha scored a wonderful goal at Anfield as Arne Slot’s side won the first of two back-to-back friendlies against Athletic Bilbao in style.

The 16-year-old lit up the game after just a few minutes when he carried the ball from deep and then drove a wicked shot across goal and in at the Kop end.

Darwin Nunez – continually linked with a move away this summer – added a second and another youngster Ben Doak got a third before the break.

Harvey Eillott scored the fourth after the interval and Gorka Guruzeta added a consolation for the Spanish side.

The match was momentarily poised in the 20th minute as teams and coaching staff on both sides paused to join in for a minute’s applause to honour Diogo Jota who died in a car crash earlier this summer.

Before the 5pm kick-off club legend Phil Thompson and Bilbao president Jon Uriarte laid wreaths in front of the Kop.

Ngumoha provided the major talking point of the first of two games at Anfield and could really be one to watch in the coming season.
