If the Phillies pull off a trade for Jhoan Duran, it’s a great move, but ONLY if the price is right.
Let’s be real… Duran is one of the nastiest relievers in baseball. Triple-digit fastball, hammer splitter, and he’s been dominant again this year around a 2.01 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and elite swing/miss and weak contact metrics. Both eye test and analytics love this guy.
He’s also not a rental. He’s under team control through 2027 and making around $4M next year! That’s rare value for a true shutdown closer. On paper, he fits the Phillies bullpen like a glove, a high-octane arm to pair with Alvarado and Kerkering in the late innings.
But heres the catch… the reported asking price from the Twins is Andrew Painter. That’s a huge overpay for a reliever imo, even one as good as Duran. Painter’s one of the top pitching prospects in baseball when healthy, and shipping him off for a bullpen piece (even a great one) could haunt the team long-term.
There are whispers the Phillies may pivot to Griffin Jax instead, who’s been quietly excellent and would cost less prospect capital. Honestly, that might be the smarter play if the Twins won’t budge on their demands.
