Eyebrows were raised when the Detroit Lions selected running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Gibbs has since shown he has been worth that pick, and then some, as he has scored 31 touchdowns in two seasons while helping the Lions to Super Bowl contender status.
He was a pivotal aspect of the league’s most creative and explosive offense last season, and he recently made a bold statement about his role in 2025 as the team looks to capture that elusive championship after falling short in each of the past two years.
Gibbs said he’ll do anything Lions coaches ask.
“I want to win a Super Bowl. I’ll line up at safety, at nickel,” he said, via Brad Galli.

While it’s unlikely the Lions will ask him to play in the secondary, he has fully embraced the versatile role he has in the offense and is saying all the right things ahead of a crucial season.
Gibbs has blossomed into one of the league’s best running backs, and after a season of 1,929 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns, it will be interesting to see how he follows that up now that offensive coordinator Ben Johnson left to become head coach of the Chicago Bears.
Detroit’s safeties and nickels are some of the best in the NFL, but if the defense goes through as many injuries as it did last season, perhaps head coach Dan Campbell will get a little more creative and let Gibbs trot out there to shut some folks down.
