The Green Bay Packers’ saga with Jaire Alexander is finally over.
The former All-Pro cornerback will be a free agent after being released earlier on Monday.
When asked about that, Packers executive Mark Murphy claimed that it was due to his constant injury issues, also praising him for his talent and lamenting it had to be this way (via Dave Schroeder):
“First of all, he has been a great player for us,” Murphy said, via Dave Schroeder of WBAY. “Obviously, elite talent. Unfortunately, just injured a lot. Unfortunately, that’s a big part of the game.”

The Packers took Alexander in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately, injuries and a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team limited him to just 14 appearances over the past couple of seasons.
He still had two years left on his four-year, $84 million contract extension.
He was slated to make $17.5 million this season, but with his contract not being guaranteed, it was an easy decision for the Packers to move on from him.
A two-time All-Pro, Alexander, who was the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history at one point, has played in just 34 of a possible 68 games in the past four seasons.
He was aware of his potential fate after the end of the season when he claimed that he didn’t have anything good to say.
The Packers reportedly tried to trade him during the NFL Draft, but to no avail.
Then, they wanted him to agree to a restructured contract, but that wasn’t the case, either, so they were hard-pressed to shed his big salary.
Even so, despite his injuries and his volatile character, there should be a strong market for him in free agency.
