Liverpool up bid for Wirtz as Reds look to seal club record deal for Leverkusen playmaker

Liverpool have increased their offer for Florian Wirtz to £113m as the race to sign the Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder intensifies, according to reports.

If successful, the Red’s latest reported bid – a package that would guarantee the Bundesliga club £100m plus £13m in add-ons – would be a club record deal, but it remains below Leverkusen’s asking price of £126m for the player.

Leverkusen, who recently appointed former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag as replacement for Xabi Alonso, rejected the Premier League champions’ £109m bid for the Germany international last weekend but appear open to further negotiations amid interest from both Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

Wirtz has made it clear he is keen to complete a move to Anfield. The proposed deal would surpass by some distance the £85m Liverpool paid to bring in Darwin Nunez from Benfica in June 2022.

The £113m offer, however, remains just shy of the £115m British transfer record fee paid by Chelsea in 2023 for Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

Wirtz, who has spent his entire senior career at Leverkusen and played a key role in the club’s unbeaten league campaign in 2023-24, was again a standout performer in Germany’s top flight last term.

The 22-year-old scored 10 goals and contributed 12 assists in 31 appearances as his side failed to retain their Bundesliga crown, finishing runners-up to Bayern Munich.

Wirtz also scored his seventh international goal for Germany on Wednesday, in a 2-1 Nations League semi-final defeat against Portugal.
