Pep’s side will challenge next year says Dunne

Manchester City will be back challenging for the Premier League title again next season – says former defender Richard Dunne.

Pep Guardiola’s side had a poor campaign this time around, finishing 13 points behind the champions Liverpool and not winning a trophy for the first time since 2016-17.

But Dunne, who made over 350 appearances for City before moving to Aston Villa in 2009, thinks they will be right back at the summit next time around.

Speaking to William Hill he said: “Manchester City will be right back up there challenging again for the Premier League next season.

“I actually think Man City did really well at the end of the season considering their drop off in form. To finish comfortably in third was a really good turnaround by the club, Pep Guardiola and the players to put themselves in the right position to prepare for next season.

“The final day of the Premier League season was a bit weird for City because there was a Champions League place available which added a bit of jeopardy.

“It wasn’t the same as winning or falling out of the league. It was a different sort of pressure.”

City still have the Club World Cup to play for.

They open their campaign in the United States on 18 June against Moroccan side Wydad AC.
