Reece James agrees new contract with Chelsea

Chelsea have secured the long-term future of captain Reece James after the defender agreed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2032.

The England international, who came through Chelsea’s academy system, has been part of the senior squad since making his debut in September 2019 and has gone on to become one of the team’s most influential players.

The agreement extends his stay well beyond his previous deal, which had been scheduled to run until 2028.

James’ new contract is believed to include performance-related incentives based on both personal and team achievements. The 26-year-old is currently Chelsea’s top earner, taking home around £250,000 per week.

Since breaking into the first team, James has made 225 appearances for the club and has featured regularly in the Premier League this season, starting 19 of his 26 outings.

During that period, he has been part of a successful spell for the London side, lifting the Champions League in 2021 along with the UEFA Super Cup later that year.

Chelsea have also won the Conference League and the Club World Cup in 2025, with James serving as captain since being handed the armband three years ago.

The contract talks are understood to have moved quickly, helped by the player’s positive progress following a series of injury setbacks that disrupted previous campaigns.

James underwent surgery in December 2023 in an effort to resolve a recurring hamstring issue that had kept him sidelined on multiple occasions.

Despite those problems, he has remained an important tactical option, capable of playing both as a full-back and in midfield.

Off the pitch, the defender is also said to have strengthened his leadership qualities after facing early scrutiny during the time of former head coach Enzo Maresca.

At international level, James has made it clear that securing a place in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup is a key ambition, having missed the last two major tournaments because of injury.

He returned to the national team setup in early 2025, appearing in qualifying matches against Albania and Latvia after a two-year absence.

Although another injury forced him to withdraw from October’s friendlies against Wales and Latvia, he was back in November and played in England’s 2-0 win over Serbia at Wembley.
