Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino upbeat after foot surgery

The midfielder is out for the rest of the season.

Arsenal‘s Mikel Merino has undergone successful surgery on a broken foot, with the Spain international declaring that he is already closer to being back.

Merino has not played for the Gunners since the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on January 25, his absence robbing them of a midfielder who has turned into an extremely valuable makeshift striker.

The 29-year-old is expected to miss the rest of the season with the injury, meaning he will be a spectator as the Gunners go for glory on four fronts.

The Premier League leaders finished top of the Champions League table, going straight through to the last 16, and are through to the EFL Cup final against Manchester City. Mikel Arteta’s men face Wigan Athletic in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

But the former Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle United and Real Sociedad man was in upbeat mood following his operation.

He posted on Instagram: “Surgery done! Already closer to be [sic] back.

“Thank you so much to everyone for your messages and love. It really gives me even more energy to face the challenge. Vamos!”

Merino has scored six goals and registered three assists in all competitions this season. He has made 77 appearances in his time in north London, scoring 15 times.
