Michkov marks return after healthy scratches to lead Flyers past Sharks originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia On Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Michkov led his Flyers team to an incredible 4-3 shootout victory against the Sharks, scoring alongside Travis Konecny during skills competition competition and returning after some healthy scratches to lead a skills competition win with 2 goals himself! He has become an invaluable member of their roster. Andrae noted: “He loves playing hockey, it shows,” and was relieved to hear of his successful return from injury. Emil Andrae expressed his happiness about that development as well: “The Flyers (6-8-2) have earned at least one point in six of their last nine games (5-3-1), starting a stretch that includes six straight at Wells Fargo Center beginning with Monday. Konecny and Erik Johnson scored goals for Philadelphia while potentially there would have been at least three others on that night alone.” They experienced several misfires and unfortunate bounces close to home that nearly cost them the game – giving up an equalizer with 2:24 minutes remaining in regulation before staving off San Jose’s power play in overtime. Michkov was whistled for roughing 2024 first overall pick Macklin Celebrini as the third-period buzzer sounded. Konecny felt “there will definitely be things we have to clean up, but you can feel our game coming together”. “Over the past four games we are more consistently playing the way that John Tortorella wants and experiencing better results.” Tortorella wanted the Flyers to continue doing what they had accomplished on their 1-1-1 road trip against three contenders. “We seem to be finding ourselves,” Flyers head coach Bill Flynn stated this morning, hoping his squad could do it again tonight in their shootout efforts and remain undefeated this season. They advanced to 3-1. These three games have gone to shootout. The Flyers took advantage of San Jose Sharks (5-9-3) that played Sunday at Prudential Center; San Jose beat New Jersey Devils with Mackenzie Blackwood making 44 saves to defeat New Jersey by one goal, winning 1-0 thanks to Mackenzie Blackwood. For half of this game’s first period alone, Philadelphia used this advantage against them, using Mackenzie Blackwood’s 44 save shutout as leverage against San Jose. * Michkov found an additional offensive spark after sitting out the last two games for health reasons, something the Flyers understand is part of their rookie winger from Russia’s development process. Konecny noted, “He’s competitive – that’s something we really respect in him.” “He brings all sorts of skills and an offensive mindset into play. However, he still competes, perseveres and hangs tough; not just contributing on offense tonight but trying different aspects of the game as well.” “Ryan Poehling provided an outstanding stretch pass in the second period for Michkov to score and extend Philadelphia’s lead to three goals, further increasing their advantage.” Michkov also helped spark Philadelphia’s power play into action; surely his presence helped inspire confidence within their camp upon being sidelined.” Michkov, Poehling and Anthony Richard combined well. * Samuel Ersson made 28 saves out of 31 attempts. Ersson has stopped 109 out of 116 shots over his last five appearances for Philadelphia Flyers, making five saves in overtime and facing only two attempts during shootout. At some point late in first period he also made back-to-back stops to keep Flyers ahead. Konecny responded a minute later by increasing the Flyers’ advantage to 2-0 with another power play goal off Michkov’s pass, giving Konecny another boost as Ersson continued playing his backup, Ivan Fedotov. But Ersson could no longer keep pace and they finally struck twice before intermission to narrow it to 3-2 for Ersson and tie things up at three each. Ivan Fedotov played as Ersson’s replacement during these final five minutes of period 2. Ivan Fedotov took his spot as Ersson’s backup during his absence in goal for his first period as Ersson’s back up with another power play goal to give Philadelphia’s lead back into their advantage and keep up against an upstart Shark team led by two goals in five minutes before intermission brought about another goal from Ersson’s team with two power play goals to narrow his advantage to three goals and Ivan Fedotov got in to finish off period 2. Ivan Fedotov took Ersson’s backup; in case Ersson needed relief, Ivan Fedotov took Ersson’s place on bench; Aleksei Kolosov was back on the ice following a lower-body injury for morning skate. San Jose goaltender Vitek Vanecek made 43 saves against just 43 Flyer shots; Richard showcased his speed to create Johnson’s game-opening goal just 1:40 minutes into play; later that faceoff Johnson showed his dedication by fighting Givani Smith against Michkov in order to help protect Michkov in defense. Johnson intervened when Smith and Michkov engaged in a pushing match; although Johnson does not typically engage in physical combat himself, he came quickly to defend Michkov – not least of all because “We all have each other’s backs!” Johnson explained. “Taking some hits for your teammates to show your commitment is worth doing. No matter if it means eating some or not; whether the fight goes your way or not; I think its the message that counts.” “Konecny noted Konecny is one of the players bringing something special into the locker room – something special which only an experienced veteran like him could bring.” Konecny spoke highly of him. “Whether he’s playing or not,” Flyers captain Claude Giroux notes in the press conference, is making an impactful contribution every day in their locker room. *The last time that Philadelphia allowed an unabated power play goal was Oct 27; their penalty kill has since then gone 17 for 17; making an important play both during third period playbacks as well as overtime periods. * Tortorella made changes in response to injuries and performances; more on that can be found here. * The Flyers practice tomorrow at 11 am ET Before leaving for Ottawa on Thursday (7:00 PM ET/NBCSP), Apple Podcasts | Youtube Music | Spotify | Stitcher | Simplecast | RSS | Watch on YouTube are featuring coverage.
