Photo showing relatives of 2024 vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz wearing T-shirts reading, “Nebraska Walz for Trump.” Wonk Ratings and Context
Associated Press confirmed the eight individuals visible are some of Walz’s distant relatives.
Online users, in anticipation of the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, discussed an online rumor alleging a photo showed some relatives of Tim Walz (Democratic vice-presidential candidate) wearing T-shirts reading: ‘Nebraska Walz for Trump.”
Walz will serve as U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate against former Republican President Donald Trump for her opponent in 2024 elections, who are both from Missouri.
On Nov. 3 an X user uploaded an archived meme featuring Tim Walz family photo with this caption (archived: This family picture depicting Tim Walz is “This is an adorable family portrait… Of Tim and Jeff Walz who strongly disapprove of each others ideologies… Love, Jeff (Tim’s older brother).”
Other X users shared the image in early September; one post (archived), reading: “Tim Walz is encouraging his family in Nebraska to vote for Donald Trump”, received almost 16 million views.

One rumor suggested someone was manipulating the image using artificial-intelligence (AI), leading some people to assume its authenticity was falsified. One post on X displayed yellow circles and arrows to show discrepancies in some people’s hands regarding number of fingers they have on each. That user posted (archived), “Thanks to Walz for Trump we know this isn’t AI at all – the Walz family are genetically predisposed towards having four-fingered hands!”

While some users criticized the poor grammar used on T-shirts featuring Walz’s image, others such as conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec (archived) and conservative commentator Benny Johnson (archived), claimed it showed her entire family.
According to The Associated Press’ account of events, however, the photo in question was in fact authentic and all eight people in it are distant cousins of Walz – meaning Posobiec and Johnson posted false information.
The Associated Press quoted Rod Edwards, who works on behalf of Charles Herbster – former Trump-backed Nebraska gubernatorial candidate who ran as an advocate against Tim Walz – for their reporting. Herbster appeared to post the photo early morning hours on September 4 with the message, ‘Tim Walz’s Family Back In Nebraska Want You To Know Something… @realDonaldTrump @JDVance #SaveAmerica”.
The high-quality nature of the original image upload helped demonstrate that any assertions regarding AI having four fingers was simply due to some fingers being obscured by others.

Edwards told the AP that in the picture were descendants of Francis Walz who is brother of Tim Walz’s grandfather; these individuals confirmed to The Associated Press their connection through text messaging to The AP.
“Shortly after Governor Tim Walz was selected as the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate, our family held an informal get-together. T-shirts were produced showing support for President Trump and J.D. Vance; we shared it with friends; when asked permission to post the image online we agreed,” according to written statements released from our family members.
“This picture and these shirts are real. We are Nebraska Walz family and related to Gov. Tim Walz through his grandfathers who were brothers. The message on these shirts reads clearly; Nebraska Walz’s for Trump.”

Edwards responded quickly when we inquired about her photo, providing details if we received additional details about its authenticity and context. Furthermore, KTLA.com confirmed the veracity of quotes made by Walz’s elder brother Jeff Walz who later stated his words weren’t meant to influence voters directly.
As further reading, we previously detailed the true story of Tim and Gwen Walz giving their next-door neighbor a car as a present.
