Unsurprisingly, Justin Fields‘ time as the New York Jets‘ starting quarterback has come to an end after a Week 11 loss to the New England Patriots. Statistically, it wasn’t his worst performance of the season, as he completed 15 of 26 passes for 116 yards and one touchdown while adding 67 rushing yards and another TD on the ground.
Fields was almost benched a few weeks ago after owner Woody Johnson made critical remarks about him, but the coaching staff finally made it official, naming Tyrod Taylor as the starter for their Week 12 game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Now, details have emerged about why the Jets made the QB change.
“The Jets’ reasoning to switch to Tyrod Taylor has to do with their desire to evaluate the young skill players on the roster, per Dan Graziano,” SleeperNFL wrote on X.

Among those players are tight end Mason Taylor and wide receivers Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie, who are newcomers and looking to establish themselves now that they have bigger opportunities.
Fields has seven touchdowns and one interception this season, and four touchdowns on the ground. They’re not terrible numbers taken out of context, but it has become clear he isn’t the answer at quarterback.
His indecisiveness and inaccuracy have prevented this offense from success. Even though it’s a lost season, Tyrod Taylor is a seasoned veteran who should be able to target the young receivers and help the front office determine if any of them can have a featured role in the offense next season.
As a rookie, Mason Taylor already looks like a potential star, so it will be interesting to see if a new quarterback can help him get even better over the rest of the season. Regardless of how that turns out, the Jets will be hunting for a QB in the 2026 NFL Draft.
