The New York Jets produced a rare special teams showcase during their 27-20 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Kene Nwangwu returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter before Isaiah Williams followed with a 74-yard punt return score just 36 seconds later.

The back-to-back sequence created immediate momentum and set the tone for the remainder of the game. The achievement marked the first time in franchise history that the Jets recorded both a kickoff return touchdown and a punt return touchdown in the same contest. It also represented a significant NFL milestone as consecutive special teams scores on back-to-back plays remain an extremely uncommon occurrence.

“The [New York Jets] become the third team in NFL history to have a kickoff return TD & a punt return TD on consecutive team plays,” via the NFL.

The Jets had previously recorded games with multiple kickoff return touchdowns and others featuring two punt return scores. However, they had never combined one of each in a single game until Sunday.

Both returns came during the opening quarter and helped New York overcome an early 7-0 deficit.

Nwangwu took the kickoff 99 yards along the right sideline after breaking through multiple defenders, including kicker Andre Szmyt. His score tied the game before Cleveland could establish any rhythm offensively.

After forcing a three-and-out on the Browns’ next possession, special teams coordinator Chris Banjo called for an aggressive approach on the punt return. Williams delivered immediately with his 74-yard touchdown run down the right sideline.

The score gave New York a 14-7 lead with 5:45 remaining in the first quarter.

The performance demonstrated how special teams can shift momentum and create scoring opportunities that change the complexion of a game within moments.
