Baker Mayfield Gushes About Emeka Egbuka

Week 1 of the NFL season was host to many fantastic performances from rookie pass catchers.

Tight end Tyler Warren had a fantastic debut for the Indianapolis Colts, running back Dylan Sampson had a lot of work through the air for the Cleveland Browns, and wideouts Travis Hunter and Tetairoa McMillan showcased why they were deserving of top 10 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, by the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers, respectively.

While all of those players had great performances, it was Emeka Egbuka of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who stole the show.

The wide receiver was dominant, scoring two touchdowns, including the game-winner against the Atlanta Falcons.

People around the NFL knew Egbuka was going to be a great pro, but it was a solid reminder that this could prove to be a fantastic first-round pick by the Buccaneers.

He’s received praise from countless people since his debut, including quarterback Baker Mayfield, who made sure to give his new teammate props for what the Ohio State product was able to accomplish.

“The lights will never be too bright for him. His last real football game was in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. National champions. He goes from that to playing his Week 1 game in the NFL, scoring two touchdowns. I don’t think you can draw up a better debut for him,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield has played with numerous young receivers throughout his career, so this praise holds more weight than that of a quarterback who has less experience.

He seems to genuinely believe Egbuka is going to be a difference-maker, not only on the Buccaneers but around the league.

Winning a championship in college primed him for the biggest moments, and Egbuka seems more than up for the challenge.
