As they prepare to make another run at success in 2024 WNBA season, New York Liberty have been working diligently towards repeating last season’s successes.
In 2023, the Liberty dramatically overhauled their roster and created one of the league’s “super teams”, leading them to win both a Commissioner’s Cup title and advance all the way to WNBA Finals with Breanna Stewart receiving her second regular season MVP award. These big moves involved signing Breanna Stewart in free agency as well as Courtney Vandersloot through trade while trading Jonquel Jones away for Jonquel Jones then signing Becknijah Laney-Hamilton and Sabrina Ionescu extension respectively.
As they prepared to begin this season, the Liberty made no major adjustments to last season’s roster. Although attempts were made to secure free agents like Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith through free agency negotiations, none were successful; that doesn’t leave them empty handed; as demonstrated last season they have the ability to compete head on against teams like Las Vegas Aces and Seattle Storm for top seeds in this year. Roster updates
Training camp has concluded for the Liberty, so now it’s time for them to make decisions ahead of the 2018-2019 season.
Courtney Vandersloot, Jonquel Jones, Betnijah Laney, Kayla Thornton and Kennedy Burke currently hold guaranteed contracts on the team; Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionecu signed non-guarantee contracts to open up spots to other players; these non-guaranteed contracts allow others to fill them, leaving four or five open roster spots to fill. As of May 5, the Liberty have not begun cutting players but with 11 competitors competing for those final spots it may happen soon enough.
Nyara Sabally, Marquesha Davis, Esmery Martinez, Jessika Carter, Leonie Fiebich, Okado Adika Brianna Fraser Jaylyn Sherrod Rita Igboke Stephanie Mawuli and Ivana Dojkic remain competing for spots with each team as other teams make cuts; after their competition has made its decisions they could turn to free agency market to pick up experienced players with more experience than are currently on their current squads. There may even be time spent taking advantage of free agency market once other teams make cuts – when other teams make cuts when other teams make them and take action so Ivana Dojkic might look for extra players once other teams make cuts; picking up experienced players can then hit free agency once other teams make cuts once other teams begin making cuts so they may choose this route when teams make cuts so as teams make cuts off-season and take steps toward adding experienced players over current roster players currently held in reserve on roster or free agencies and add on additional experienced ones who currently exist on your current pool players by making use of free agency once other teams make cuts as soon as teams make cuts when other teams start making cuts; taking advantage of free agency market players may grab additional players with more experience once other teams make cuts then entering it when other teams make cuts thus taking advantage of any cuts made available on player from free agencies once other teams make cuts off to add players with more experienced ones off your current pool players from teams which may potentially grab more experienced ones from another pool and thus adding players from another pool than what you currently possess from there once other teams! There might even more experienced than current.

Maintaining Chemistry from Last Season
With their run to the WNBA Finals last season, there is much anticipation from the Liberty. Reigning MVP Breanna Stewart looks set to lead them, continuing her exceptional play – current odds indicate she may repeat. Jonquel Jones experienced an upswing nearing the end of last season that fans hope continues into this one; Jones played winter season WCBA (Women’s Chinese Basketball Association), then entered directly into WNBA action this year while most other core members like Vandersloot Ionescu and Stewart remained here over this offseason period.

Las Vegas will need to perform at their best if they hope to compete, given that most of their core has returned except Candace Parker who announced her retirement last week. Seattle also beefed up in the offseason by signing Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith; New York must return quickly in peak condition if it wants any chance against these teams.
Solving the Depth Problem
One issue for the Liberty going into this season is their depth. This becomes especially crucial down the stretch when fatigue and injuries may become an issue. While your starting lineup boasts multiple No.1 draft picks as well as reigning MVP and talent to carry them far, experience may be lacking on their bench when compared with that of rival team Aces’ bench depth.

Front court depth issues remain the Liberty’s greatest source of contention, having tried and failed to sign Ogwumike as well as several key bigs that they lost during training camps. With camp coming to a close soon enough there could be other teams’ cut players that have more experience than what is already in camp with New York; adding just a few players from free agency or another team may provide needed relief in filling New York’s lack of depth relative to Vegas.
Season Prediction
The Liberty are one of the top teams in the league. Led by their talented core, they should remain among the top teams throughout their schedule if healthy; success will depend on two things – how effectively their core plays and whether or not they add new depth pieces to strengthen the roster.
