Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain delighted their home crowd by winning the Mutua Madrid Open doubles title on Sunday at Caja Magica after an unexpected win against Barbora Krejcikova & Laura Siegemund by defeating them by scores of 6-0 6-2 in what many considered an unimpressive final matchup. No words can truly express my happiness at making history at home and winning this tournament…it was incredible having so much support from fans – they gave us everything! and this victory makes our journey very sweet indeed. Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo made history when they became the first Spanish women ever to win Madrid Doubles after Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro had come in second twice before; “Wow!” exclaimed Bucsa after winning. “I never imagined we could make history, but our wish has finally come true!” declared Sorribes Tormo after winning both at home and away for Madrid – something he particularly enjoys doing. “That is truly extraordinary!” Sorribes Tormo concluded his statement by exclaiming, “That is simply amazing”. Sorribes Tormo believes their history together has been favorable. “Originally I signed on with Mery [Marie Bouzkova], but then she suddenly phoned and informed me she couldn’t play, leaving Sorribes Tormo feeling dismayed that his partner could no longer make the game.” “When speaking with Cristina’s father the day prior, he mentioned they didn’t yet have anyone playing on her team and were waiting to see if anyone could join. So I went directly to the gym where I chanced upon Ivan; after asking him whether they had found anyone yet Ivan answered in the affirmative when asked by me: ‘Have you found anyone yet/do you want to play'” He responded positively.” Mery came quickly and withdrew, helping us immensely; then when they told us we only had 15 minutes for registration we called Mery and Cristina back so they could sign up before withdrawing again and Cristina joining.” Sorribes Tormo noted, each match proved difficult: “What made our performance effective was going through match by match and playing every point at every opportunity – even today I believe we played flawlessly; but anything can change at any moment!” As the tournament neared an end, both players showed emotion from all levels. “No words can truly express how it feels to make history playing at home and winning this incredible tournament,” declared Bucsa, while Sorribes Tormo added: “We feel truly honored that the fans backed us so enthusiastically; their support makes our victory all that much sweeter!” “Bucsa won her third career WTA doubles title of 2019, her second of 2019 alongside Kamilla Rakhimova at 2024 Bogota and first at WTA 1000 level – her debut. On Monday she reached her highest doubles ranking of No 38 before rising 12 spots to No 27.” Sorribes Tormo became only the sixth Top 20 doubles player since 2004, rising from 26th position last week up to No 17 today as part of Sorribes Tormo’s five WTA titles won at WTA 1000 Beijing last autumn together with Bouzkova.”
